HANDLING In the sense used here handling includes operations involved in the receipt of the supply of lubricants and the transfer of these materials to in-plant storage. The type of handling depends on the form of receipt of the lubricants in packages in mini-bins or in bulk. A. Packaged Products All shipments of oils greases and associated petroleum products in containers up to and including 55-gallon U.S. oil drums and 400 lb grease drums are considered to be packaged products. Figure 18.1 shows the size shape and weight of the most popular standard lubricant containers. To aid in planning storage space racks or shelves the dimensions of the containers illustrated and cartons of smaller packages are shown as well. Most containers are made of sheet steel in thicknesses and constructions suitable for their contents the intended service and the applicable freight regulations. Exceptions are grease gun cartridges and the nonmetal lubricant containers typically used for smaller packages that are made of plastic or spirally wound fiberboard with an oil- or grease-proof liner and metal ends. As delivered each container is sealed with appropriate covers gaskets lids bungs caps and seals. In addition each container is stamped embossed stenciled lithographed or labeled with the brand name of the lubricant it contains and appropriate safety information. Most packaged lubricants are delivered to the user by truck or freight car. The 55 gallon-oil drum or 400 lb grease drum is the most common container since it is usually the most economical way for the small user to purchase packaged lubricating oil greases or other petroleum products. For medium or large users mini-bins and bulk deliveries discussed later may offer still greater savings. Drums can be unloaded without damage from trucks or freight cars that do not have a hydraulic tailgate by sliding them down wood or metal skids Figure 18.2 . Skids are commercially available in 16 in. 0.41 m widths and in lengths from 6
