CHAPTER Buying and Using Paints and Brushes In this chapter you will find a set of exercises I have designed to help you learn about colors in the most practical way I know by mixing and painting with them. I will assume that you have never painted and will therefore begin with the most basic instruction what materials to buy how to set yourself up to work how to hold a brush how to arrange hues on a palette what kind of paper to use how to mix colors even how to clean your brushes. Then starting with the simplest exercise painting a color wheel you will begin using the color vocabulary to help you in mixing colors. You will learn to see colors accurately to mix them and to combine them to achieve beautiful color compositions. 3 6 Color by Betty Edwards Buying Supplies Paints Art supply stores can be a bit daunting. Art materials are numerous complicated and variable in price and quality. I have kept the materials needed for the exercises that follow as simple and inexpensive as possible. I recommend acrylic paints over oils watercolors gouache or poster paints although any of these can be substituted if you happen already to have them. Acrylics are relatively reliable widely available inexpensive nontoxic and unlike oil paints are mixed with water. Acrylic colors become slightly darker when they dry but other paint mediums have different problems and are somewhat more difficult to work with. You can buy acrylics in small bottles two ounces or four ounces or in tubes - the pigment quality and the cost are about the same. Bottled pigments are slightly easier to handle since they are ready for painting and do not need to be thinned with water. However tube pigments are more widely available. I recommend that you buy pigments designated artist quality rather than student quality because the former have a .
