In Canada regulations governing foodstuffs and food additives are part of the Food and Drug Act and are enforced by the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada. The following are some important definitions Food Any substance whether cooked processed or raw that is intended for human consumption including drinks chewing gum and any substance used in the preparation of a food but not including cosmetics tobacco or any substance used as a drug. This definition includes food additives. Food Additives Any substance including any source of radiation the use of which results in or may reasonably be expected to result in it or its by-products becoming a part of or affecting the characteristics of a food.
