As there was then no single body with responsibility to secure this coordination the Chorley Committee recommended setting up a central body independent of government to provide a focus and forum for common interest groups in the geographic information area undertake promotional activities and review progress and submit proposals for developing national policy. For convenience this proposed body was labeled the Centre for Geographic Information CGI . As the management of GI has developed since then so too have attempts to coordinate the activity. Indeed since the publication of the Chorley report in 1987 a number of these initiatives have come and gone with varying degrees of success. For most of that time the chief coordinating mechanism for the GI industry has been 2004 by CRC Press LLC the AGI.
