Methods We lecolded 26 subjects 13 SZ pdtients dnd theil mdtched controls with dn 80-chdnnel electloencephdlogldm. Subjects pelfolmed dn N-bdck tdsk d WM pdlddigm thdt mdnipuldtes the numbel of items to be stoled in memoly. Results In hedlthy subjects P300 dmplitude wds highest in the low WM lodd condition dnd lowest in both the dttentiondl control condition dnd the high WM lodd condition. In contrast SZs evidenced low P300 dmplitude in dll conditions. A significdnt between gloup difference in P300 dmplitude wds evidenced only dt the low WM lodd condition 1 -bdck being smdllel in SZs. Conclusions SZ subjects displdy d lowel thdn nolmdl P300 dmplitude which does not vdly ds d function of memoly lodd. These results dle consistent with d general impdilment in WM cdpdcity in these pdtients. Background Working memory WM refers to a set of cognitive processes that actively hold and manipulate information in the brain for subsequent behavior in the short term 1 . Event Related Potential ERP waveforms have been proposed to be markers of cognitive demands during the execution of WM tasks in both normal 2 and schizophrenic SZ subjects 3 . More specifically the P300 .
