I also analyze the development of winter fruit melons and vegetable onions and cherry tomatoes production how the enterprises began and how each became one of the main economic activities in the community. I present the strategies that farmers and brokers implemented to increase their room for maneuvering in international markets. Farmers created local organizations to obtain credit inputs technical assistance labor and access to the international market. The problems and conflicts that led farmers to close their packing plants and stop producing for the international market are identified. Both communities developed strong farmer organizations to respond to the emerging agroecology opportunities provided by irrigation and market opportunities resulting from international trade regimes including the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA . Farmers in these communities are integrated into commodity markets that have developed their production and reached the international market.
