Franz Marc Biography Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc was born on 8 February 1880 in Munich Germany. He was the second son of the Munich landscape painter Wilhelm Marc and his wife Sophie. After deciding not to become a priest he studied art in Munich but broke off his studies after a visit to Paris in 1903 where he was fascinated by French Impressionism though he disagreed with it. In 1907 he married Marie Schnur also a Munich painter who had an illegitimate child with an earlier partner. She and Marc divorced in 1908. An early painting Schlich the dog jumping was a Christmas present to his mother in that year. In 1910 Marc joined a group of painters based in Munich called The Blue Rider whose best known member was the Russian-born Wassily Kandinsky. In 1911 he married another Munich painter called Maria Franck in London. On 4 March 1916 Marc was killed at the battle of Verdun.
