| Chapter 3 Life Cycle Design and Management The primary objective of design activity consists of translating an idea into a product and then incorporating the set of needs that this product must satisfy into detailed design. In the development of new products today the designer must achieve this transformation while taking account of an ever-greater range of requisites not solely functional time to market profitability reliability safety recyclability which arise in relation to the diverse life cycle phases the product must pass through. The principal difficulty inherent in a design intervention of this type lies in the fact that the most effective choices concerning a single requirement often conflict with other aspects of this wide-ranging problem. The subject of this chapter is the extension of the life cycle approach previously discussed in the context of product design. Having drawn a general picture of Life Cycle Design which fully interprets this approach the main aspects linked to environmental protection are analyzed here delineating how the complexity of the product design and development process necessitates an intervention at the management level of production activity. Life Cycle Approach in Product Design Design choices result in effects that can be propagated throughout a product s entire life cycle. They are evidenced by alterations in the behavior of the product itself with regard to the principal metrics of performance costs times and quality during the various phases of the cycle Borg et al. 2000 . This direct relation between design choices and the behavior of a product over its life cycle distinctly recalls what was said concerning the application of Life Cycle Theory to the management of product development Section with particular reference to concepts of product-entity and generating force. According to this perspective the life cycle of a product is understood in terms of an evolutionary sequence event progression of a linear type .
