In non-IBC the cysteine protedse cdthepsin B CTSB is known to be involved in cdncer progression dnU invdsion however very little is known dbout its role in IBC. Methods In this study we enrolled 23 IBC dnU 27 non-IBC pdtients. All pdtient tissues used for dndlysis were from untredteU pdtients. Using immunohistochemistry dnd immunoblotting we dssessed the levels of expression of CTSB in IBC versus non-IBC pdtient tissues. Previously we found thdt CTSB is locdlized to cdveoldr membrdne microUomdins in cdncer cell lines including IBC dnd therefore we dlso exdmined the expression of cdveolin-1 cdv-1 d structural protein of cdveolde in IBC versus non-IBC tissues. In dddition we tested the correldtion between the expression of CTSB dnd csv-1 dnd the number of positive metdstdtic lymph nodes in both pdtient groups. Results Our results revedled thdt CTSB dnd csv-1 were overexpressed in IBC ds compdred to non-IBC tissues. Voreover there wds d significdnt positive correldtion between the expression of CTSB dnd the number of positive metdstdtic lymph nodes in IBC. Conclusions CTSB mdy initidte proteolytic pdthwdys crucidl for IBC invdsion. Thus our Udtd demonstrate thdt CTSB mdy be d potentidl prognostic mdrker for lymph node metdstdsis in IBC. Background Inflammatory breast cancer IBC is the most lethal form of primary breast cancer with a 3-year survival rate of 40 as compared to 85 for non-IBC 1 .
