Before endoscopes for colon examination achieved the remarkable technological progress that we see today, there was a long period when rigid proctosigmoidoscopes were used for examination of the distal half of the sigmoid colon and rectum. Intracolonic photography of colonic mucosa, using a modification of the gastrocamera described as “sigmoidocamera” or “colonocamera,” was briefly used in Japan. Diagnosis was by examining pictures of the colonic mucosa obtained with the colonocamera.
