Floods are part of nature. It is not technically feasible nor economically affordable to prevent all properties from flooding. Therefore a risk-based approach is taken to achieve the best results possible using the budget and resources available. As almost all of the Environment Agency’s funding has historically come from the taxpayer, we have a responsibility to ensure we achieve as much benefit as possible from the funds provided. These include benefits for people, the economy and the environment and all are valued when we identify the need for investment in flood risk management.
