The last few years have seen great changes in surgical postgraduate examinations. The ‘old style’ FRCS of the Royal Colleges has been replaced by the MRCS. The FRCS (Gen) is now awarded as a Diploma after an exit examination, on completion of higher surgical training. This book is primarily aimed at the basic surgical trainee (BST) who should use it for revision before the MRCS in General Surgery and perhaps to a lesser extent in Accident & Emergency. After doing the initial groundwork from the standard textbooks, this book should ideally be read a couple of months before taking the examination, much more so prior to the final assessment.
