Animal parts are generally easier to identify than plants but only if they have not been processed. For example, many ingredients such as rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory are obvious if whole but if they are processed into shavings or powder then it is impossible to identify them by eye. For most processed material forensic analysis is probably the only option if the items are not labelled. The types of animal parts to look out for are bones, horns, tusks, gallbladders, shells and fur-covered glands (see section on fakes below). Identification beyond this level can only really be undertaken by an expert in animal.
