The proposed nutrition principles apply to individual foods, as well as to main dishes and meal products. The Working Group started with a set of proposed food group contributions and nutrient limits for individual foods. It then calculated appropriate adjustments to accommodate main dishes and meals, as those products are defined by federal labeling regulations. The adjustments reflect the fact that main dishes and meals are 18 defined as containing at least two or three 40-gram food portions respectively, and include foods from two or more of four food groups. The adjustments also reflect the fact that a main dish or meal.
