This chapter presents the 2004 MDHS findings on maternal and child health in Malawi. Topics discussed include the utilisation of maternal and child health services; maternal and childhood immunisations; common childhood illnesses and their treatment; barriers to obtaining health care; ability to negotiate sex; and attitudes towards family violence. Combined with information on childhood mortality, this information can be used to identify women and children who are at risk because of nonuse of health services and to provide information that would assist in planning interventions to improve maternal and child health.
