The routed network running RIP is set up to source a default RIP advertisement to all the hosts connected to the engineering lab’s LAN. Hosts running RIP typically send all traffic destined to other IP subnets to the default router. If one of the workstations connected to this LAN has a second interface connected to another LAN segment, it advertises itself as the default router. This would cause all hosts on the engineering LAN to send traffic destined to other IP subnets to the misguided workstation. It can also cause many wasted hours troubleshooting routing behavior that can be avoided.
