With the onset of technology and the demand for an educated workforce, more Canadians than ever before are taking up reading. Sales of books in Canada increased by 28% from 1989 to 1995, including an increase of 7% from 1994 to 1995. Mass market paperbacks are the primary driver of the increase with a 40% increase in sales from 1989 to 1995. Retail magazine sales have not increased at the same rate as book sales. Magazine sales actually dropped by 4% between 1991 and 1993 with a 4% increase between 1995 and 1996. This increase has been attributed to an increase in speciality and regional publications.
