RECs provide another alternative to switching electricity suppliers. Also known as green certificates, green tags, or tradable renewable certificates (TRCs), RECs represent the “green” attributes of renewable energy generation and can be sold separately from commodity electricity. REC-based products may be supplied from a variety of renewable energy sources throughout the country and sold to customers nationally, or they may be supplied from renewable energy sources in a particular region or locality and marketed as such to local customers. More than 25 companies offer certificate-based green power products to retail customers via the Internet, and a number of other companies.
