The biofilm-related and carnosine-hydrolyzing aminoacylhistidine dipepti-dase (pepD) gene from Vibrio alginolyticuswas cloned and sequenced. The recombinant PepD protein was produced and biochemically characterized and the putative active-site residues responsible for metal binding and catalysis were identified.
