Coos County has been labeled as one of the least healthy counties in Oregon. Coos County residents don’t live as long as the average Oregonian. Socio-economic factors here—especially poverty--contribute to poor health. However, the leading causes of early, preventable death in Coos County continue to be tobacco use, followed by diet, obesity and inactivity—individual behaviors that can be influenced by policy and system changes. Together with our community partners, we have made progress in creating smoke-free environments, although the positive impact of prevention efforts on chronic disease may not be fully realized here for.
