Empathy- and sympathy-feelings cannot however make up the whole psychic presupposition of such a feeling of pleasure. It would be wrong to suppose - as does Aristotle in his doctrine of catharsis - that one emotional arousal in a subject can in itself and without further ado be the cause of a second emotional arousal in the same subject, that a feeling of empathetic displeasure, . pain at the downfall of the hero, already and only because it is there, could trigger the pleasure-feeling of aesthetic enjoyment (150f). .
