Some studies investigated changes in aesthetic evaluation of artworks as a function of accompanying verbal information. Cupchik et al. (1994) showed that interpretative activ- ity increased the perception of the artworks concerning their power, challenge, and per- sonal meaning. Cupchik and Gebotys (1988) suggested that an indication of such an elaboration process would be a heightened appreciation of the interpretative challenge of the artwork. As liking and preference are most frequently measured in studies of art appreciation, it would be important to see whether an elaboration process also results in higher ratings for liking
