Available primarily as an emulsifiable concentrate and dust, malathion is used as a premise treatment on approximately 6 percent (12 million square feet) of poultry house area by North Carolina producers. Premise treatments are applied for fly and beetle control at a rate of to pound of active ingredient per 1,000 square feet of surface area. Dust formulations are applied at about pound of active ingredient per 1,000 square feet. The status of malathion is not yet clear, but many livestock and poultry uses have been voluntarily cancelled.
