Long before the Civil Rights movement, before Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education, before the Harlem Renaissance, before Reconstruction, before the Civil War between the states, newspapers provided black people with a voice. The black press was the redeeming document of black America. This press educated an audience about social concerns and racist attitudes while fighting against incredible odds merely to survive.
