Regimen efficiency and simplification. Another key advantage of Options B and B+ is greater efficiency, very much in accord with Treatment principles. First, the same simplified, fixed-dose combination ARV regimen can be used throughout the PMTCT intervention. Further, it is possible, and highly desirable, to provide the same regimen both for PMTCT and as the first-line national ART regimen for non-pregnant individuals. The ability to use the same regimen for PMTCT and for first-line ART considerably simplifies drug forecasting, procurement, supply to facilities, and drug stock monitoring. The first-line regimen of tenofovir/lamivudine/efavirenz (TDF/3TC/EFV) is available as a single-pill fixed-dose combination and has been recommended recently as the optimized regimen for first-line adult.
