Social media is increasingly viewed as an important tool for women’s empowerment in the Arab region. Indeed, the Arab Social Media Report regional survey findings show that many of the responses of male and female social media users were similar, indicating that social media may be a “gender equalizer.” The existing gap in Arab women’s usage of social media compared to men and to the global average is primarily a result of perceived societal and cultural constraints Arab women continue to face in the region.
