NBC Universal and News Corp. started Hulu as a joint venture to build a new website for streaming videos, with brief ads embedded, over the Internet. Both companies have a library of hit television shows and movies, NBC through its ownership of the NBC network and Universal Studios and News Corp. through its ownership of the Fox network and 20th Century Fox Studios. The two equity partners envisioned Hulu as an online destination for viewing professionally-produced entertainment, distinct from the free videos—many created by consumers—on the wildly popular YouTube site. From the start, Hulu negotiated to include movies and television episodes from other networks and studios and offered advertising deals to companies seeking a large online audience. Hulu was organized as a limited-liability company to give the partners more flexibility in managing the joint venture.
