CASE SUGAR MOBILE AND GOOGLE’S PROJECT FI The Problem •  Traffic through Wi-Fi routers is increasing, with predictions of more than ½ of Internet traffic going through Wi-Fi by 2017 •  This could slow smartphones and tablet response times •  It also reduces the profits of telecommunications carriers who earn money from telephone data plans. •  This means that there is a conflict between carrier and consumer goals 2 CASE SUGAR MOBILE AND GOOGLE’S PROJECT FI The Solutions Inverted Wi-Fi: •  Inverted Wi-Fi happens when Wi-Fi is the main carrier and cellular is the backup •  It reduces the need for carriers to increase their cellular infrastructure while also keeping costs low for the consumer •  Only one such company, Sugar Mobile, is available in Canada CASE THE BATTLE FOR THE MOBILE WALLET Questions 1.  Describe how Sugar Mobile and Google’s Project Fi could be disruptive to the major Canadian and . cellular service providers. 2.  What actions should the major cellular service providers take to compete .
