Chapter 8 - Virtual memory. After studying this chapter, you should be able to: Define virtual memory; describe the hardware and control structures that support virtual memory; describe the various OS mechanisms used to implement virtual memory; describe the virtual memory management mechanisms in UNIX, Linux, and Windows 7. | Chapter 8 Virtual Memory Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles, 6/E William Stallings Dave Bremer Otago Polytechnic, . ©2008, Prentice Hall These slides are intended to help a teacher develop a presentation. This PowerPoint covers the entire chapter and includes too many slides for a single delivery. Professors are encouraged to adapt this presentation in ways which are best suited for their students and environment. 1 Roadmap Hardware and Control Structures Operating System Software UNIX and Solaris Memory Management Linux Memory Management Windows Memory Management Memory management is a complex interrelationship between processor hardware and operating system software. We focus first on the hardware aspect of virtual memory, looking at the use of paging, segmentation, and combined paging and segmentation. Then we look at the issues involved in the design of a virtual memory facility in operating systems. 2 Terminology Some key terms related to virtual memory. 3 Key | Chapter 8 Virtual Memory Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles, 6/E William Stallings Dave Bremer Otago Polytechnic, . ©2008, Prentice Hall These slides are intended to help a teacher develop a presentation. We focus first on the hardware aspect of virtual memory, looking at the use of paging, segmentation, and combined paging and segmentation. Then we look at the issues involved in the design of a virtual memory facility in operating systems. 2 Terminology Some key terms related to virtual memory. 3 Key points in Memory Management 1) Memory references are logical addresses dynamically translated into physical addresses at run time A process may be swapped in and out of main memory occupying different regions at different times during execution 2) A process may be broken up into pieces that do not need to located contiguously in main memory Two characteristics of paging and segmentation are the keys to this breakthrough in memory management: All memory references within a process are logical addresses that are dynamically translated into physical addresses at run time. A process may be swapped in and out of main memory occupying different regions of main memory at different times during the course of execution. 2. A process may be broken up into a number of pieces (pages or segments) and these pieces need not be contiguously located in main memory during execution. The combination of dynamic run-time address translation and the use of a page or segment table permits this. 4 .
