In order to understand how humans interact with computers, we need to have an understanding of both parties in the interaction. The previous chapter explored aspects of human capabilities and behavior of which we need to be aware in the context of human–computer interaction; this chapter considers the computer and associated input–output devices and investigates how the technology influences the nature of the interaction and style of the interface. | Lecture 5 THE INTERACTION Prof. Dr. Sajjad Mohsin 1 Today’s Outline We will cover today, Interaction models translations between user and system ergonomics physical characteristics of interaction What is interaction? communication user system but is that all ? 2 participants user and the system 3 Different types of interaction Models of interaction Terms of interaction Norman model Interaction framework Terms of interaction Traditionally, the purpose of an interactive system is to aid a user in accomplishing goals from some application domain. Tasks are operations to manipulate the concept of domain. A domain defines an area of expertise and knowledge in some real-world activity Some examples of domains are graphic design, authoring and process control in a factory. 6 Some terms of interaction Domain – the area of work under study . graphic design Goal – what you want to achieve . create a solid red triangle Task – how you go about doing it – ultimately in terms of operations or actions . select fill tool, click over triangle Note traditional interaction use of terms differs a lot especially task/goal !!! Domain or Problem Domain A problem domain is the area of expertise or application that needs to be examined to solve a problem. A problem domain is simply looking at only the topics of an individual's interest, and excluding everything else. For example, when developing a system to measure good practice in medicine, carpet drawings at hospitals would not be included in the problem domain. In this example the domain refers to relevant topics solely within the delimited area of interest: medicine. Goal A goal is a desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. Task A task is an activity that needs to be accomplished within a defined period of time or by a | Lecture 5 THE INTERACTION Prof.
