The main part is a long tube called the digestive tract. It is also known as the gastrointestinal tract. It is about 16 feet (5 m) long. It starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. The inside wall is lined with mucous membrane, also known as mucosa (myoo-KOSA). The digestive tract takes in food. It then breaks it down so that the body can use it. This is called digestion.
