Structural elucidation of five phenolic compounds from the rhizomes of curculigo annamitica

Phytochemical research on the chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of the rhizomes of Curculigoannamitica Gagnep. collected in Binh Chau - Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, led to the isolation of five phenolic compounds namely 3,4- dimethoxysalicylicacid(1), 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzoicacid(2), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (3), pcoumaric acid (4) and 2-(ethoxymethyl) benzene-1,4-diol (5). | Vietnam Journal of Science and Technology 56 (4A) (2018) 99-105 STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF FIVE PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS FROM THE RHIZOMES OF CURCULIGO ANNAMITICA Ta Thi Lien1, Nguyen Hoang Bao Tran2, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong2, Nguyen Thi Hoa2, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu3, Huynh Bui Linh Chi4, Pham Nguyen Kim Tuyen2, *, Nguyen Kim Phi Phung5 1 Department of Chemistry, Thang Long Secondary School, 482 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City 2 Faculty of Environmental Science, Sai Gon University, 273 An Duong Vuong, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City 3 Faculty of Basic Science, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 217 Hong Bang, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City 4 Department of Nature, Dong Nai University, 4 Le Quy Don, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province 5 Faculty of Chemistry, University of Science, 227 Nguyen Van Cu, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City * Email: phngktuyen@ Received: 24 August 2018; Accepted for publication: 10 October 2018 ABSTRACT Phytochemical research on the chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of the rhizomes of Curculigoannamitica Gagnep. collected in Binh Chau - Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Ba Ria Vung Tau province, led to the isolation of five phenolic compounds namely 3,4dimethoxysalicylicacid(1), 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzoicacid(2), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (3), pcoumaric acid (4) and 2-(ethoxymethyl) benzene-1,4-diol (5). Their chemical structures were confirmed by spectroscopic methods including HR-ESI-MS, ESI-MS,1D and 2D-NMR and compared with reported data. Compound 1 was known to be present for the first time from the Hypoxidaceae family. Keywords: Curculigo annamitica, Hypoxidaceae, rhizome, phenolic compounds. 1. INTRODUCTION The genus Curculigo (Hypoxidaceae), which comprises about 20 species, is distributed in tropical and subtropical zone. About seven species of them occurr in Vietnam [1]. Curculigo species have been used as an analeptic agent for treatment of decline and in the treatment of dysmenorrhea and rheumatism [1-5]. They are rich in .
