Nguyễn Thành Luân Viện KHKT Nông nghiệp Bắc Trung Bộ SUMMARY Result of the selection of new aromatic rice varieties and specialty rice varieties in Thua Thien Hue province from 2009- 2011 Some aromatic rice varieties and traditional rice varieties grown in Thua Thien Hue account for 1617% of the total of rice cultivation area of 53,000 ha; among which HT1 aromatic rice variety-the major variety-has not met the requirement of rice production and the traditional rice varieties are commonly cultivated in the sloping land, but they have given the low yields of tons/ha. Therefore, after having collected 14 varieties of aromatic rice and 11 upland rice varieties of specialty, we selected the promising aromatic rice variety of TL6 and the upland rice variety of Ra Du. The yield of TL6 was significantly higher than those of HT1. TL6 has the short growth duration of 125 and 110 days, the yield of which is and tons/ha in Spring crop and Summer-Autumn crop respectively; however it is highly susceptible to ear blast disease. Transplanting TL6 rice seedlings at the density of 49 hills/m2 and applying fertilizers at the rate of 100-120 N+90P2O5+90 K2O are found to be the best way for giving the highest yield and economic effectiveness. Ra Du was of the highest yield and the best quality. It is the photosensible variety which has the long growth duration of 180 days, tolerance to drought and the yield of tons/ha /crop in a year with its time of flowering stage about early October. Direct sowing time of Ra Du under drilling method in April, in density of 36 hills/m2, and applying fertilizers at the rate of 60N:80P2O5:80K2O are found to be the best way for giving the highest yield and economic effectiveness in the mountainous .
