Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of treating fish-processing wastewater by handmade medium. We compare the treatment efficiency of two lab-scale submerged-medium aerotanks operating in opposite rules: air and water moving in the same direction in one tank and in the opposite directions in the other tank. After 8 hours of hydraulic retention, most parameters of post-treatment wastewater from the two aerotanks meet the accepted levels for discharging into the environment as stated in Column A of the two Standards of Vietnam QCVN 11:2008/BTNMT and QCVN 40:2011/BTNMT. The operation of air and water moving in opposite directions work more effectively than the other way around. The results of the study show that PET bottles can be reused as a submerged medium for aerotank to treat fish-processing wastewater.
