Tuberculosis is a major public health problem and second largest cause of death among infectious diseases. Rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis and detection of drug resistance is essential for effective disease control. Control of TB is hindered by the lack of a simple and effective diagnostic tool that can be utilised in resource limited settings. Molecular techniques using Real time PCR technology have gained momentum for rapid diagnosis and detection of drug resistance.
