The experiment was conducted at the Soil Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Soil Science, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during the period from January, 2011 to June, 2011 with a view to isolate and characterized promising diazotrophs from sugarcane rhizosphere. Twenty four bacterial strains were isolated from sugarcane rhizosphere soils. Among the 24 isolated strains thirteen of them were found as Gram negative and eleven were Gram positive. Seventeen of the strains were positive for cellulose activity.
