Antibiotic resistance and the clinical efficacy of existing antibiotics have become a major cause of concern. The indiscriminate use of commercial antimicrobial drugs to treat infectious diseases has also sometimes been associated with negative effects on the host such as hypersensitivity, immune response and allergic reactions.
