The K-pop wave has gradually emerged in South Korea since the early years of the 21st century and gradually embarked on its spread throughout Asia before breaking through and becoming a global phenomenon since the 2010s. The popularity of “Gangnam Style” accompanied by a rising awareness of South Korea’s national image and of K-pop, sharply increased the local participatory fan culture. In K-pop Reception and Participatory Fan Culture in Austria, Sang-Yeon Sung highlights K-pop’s popularity and its participatory fan culture in Austria between February and August 2013 through qualitative in-depth interviews with event organizers, sponsors, fans and participant-observation of two major K-pop events held in Vienna.
