The two vessels will be built at two different shipyards in the country s north - Ha Long in Quang Ninh province and Nam Trieu in Hai Phong city. In a US 336 million deal the Graig Group ordered the 15 bulkcarriers of 53 000 deadweight tons DWT from Vinashin in 2004. Officials expect the first vessel to be completed by May 31 2006 and the remaining 14 vessels will be presented to Graig Group in five month intervals. The signing of the building contracts signals the start of a busy and successful year for Vinashin as the company has also received orders from Vinalines for 13 cargo vessels ranging from 6 500-22 500 DWT. Vinashin is now negotiating a deal for 16 container vessels of 5 000 DWT for the Dane Shipping Company. If plans go smoothly the contract should be signed in the next two export contract between Vinashin and the Dutch company Splithoff is also in the pipeline. Vinashin aims to manufacture seven million tons of ships by 2010 one million tons of which will be for export. For 2015 the company targets 10 million tons of ships including three million tons for export. Vinashin has developed a plan to co-operate closely with foreign ship building companies and related companies for mutual benefits. This is a good way to help Vinashin compete with other ship building companies the world over said Vinashin Deputy General Director Nguyen Quoc Anh. One of Vinashin s most important strategies is its competitive pricing. The company uses Vietnamese spare parts and equipment instead of imported items whenever possible. Over the past four years Vinashin has maximised its limited State budget allocation to cut down on imports. Now approximately 30-40 per cent of the equipment and materials used in the shipyards are made in Viet Nam. Vinashin expects this
