Ports play a vital role in the development of a country. Hence it is imperative that India should have world class ports complying with all international standards. To ensure that the standards are maintained study on the safety health and environmental concerns for Indian ports becomes crucial. The logistics sector is an important contributor to the development of an economy. It links together various factors of production and to enable a producer reach the consumer of his products. If India s transport systems are efficient these can have positive multiplier effects such as improving the nation s accessibility to global markets increasing employment opportunities and bringing in additional investments. Given that 90 of India s trade by volume takes place through water transport the significance of ports and the shipping sector in India cannot be overstated.
