In Vietnam the term urban village is used extensively in reseaches on urban planning and urban management but the concept and characteristics of the urban village model in Vietnam are totally different from the concept that has been apply in developed countries. Therefore this paper aims to clarify the concept and characteristics of Vietnam s urban village model in comparison with the international urban village model thereby strengthening the theoretical framework on urban village in Vietnam. In order to maintain and redevelop urban villages in a sustainable way it is very essential to study the interaction between urban villages and surrounding new urban development areas to find out suitable approach that bridging the gap between different urban development models in terms of institutional spatial and social aspect while enhancing the core values of urban village model to establish the sense of place for the urban areas.
