Such factories needed raw materials to build and power the new machines as well as to create industrial products. Britain possessed a rich supply of natural resources such as coal iron copper lead and tin. These resources were located in close proximity to population centers thus facilitating their use in factories. A second key factor was population growth. Previously technologies had been applied in agriculture to create more efficient land use and more food production that allowed the island to support a growing population.
