It provides one of the best sources of protein and the consumption of fish provides polyunsaturated fatty acids and essential minerals for human health. However contrary to their known benefits fish may pose potential risks to human health since they can accumulate substantial concentrations of heavy metals in their tissues. Mugil cephalus were randomly collected in commercial catches at local markets in Quang Binh from July to October 2018. Liver gills and the dorsal muscle were dissected and analyzed for Lead Pb Cadmium Cd Iron Fe Copper Cu and Zinc Zn contents by the flame atomic absorption spectrometer by PerkinElmer AAnalyst 800 at Institute Biology of University Pedagogical of Cracow Poland. The concentrations of metals were detected in all investigated samples. The mean concentration of Fe Cd Pb Zn and Cu was recorded in gills liver and muscle was recorded and and and and and µg g dry weight respectively. A health risk analysis based on target hazard quotient THQ estimated for consumptions. Total THQ values of heavy metals in muscle of Mugil cephalus for men and women were and . Total THQ values over 1 were not observed showing that the health risk associated with exposure to these 5 heavy metals was insignificant. Keywords Mugil cephalus health risk heavy metals Quang Binh.
