Using the Standards: Algebra - Grade 5 focuses on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) content standards of Algebra. The activities are divided into four main sections, based on the NCTM Algebra standards. NCTM defines the standards as follows. Students will be able to represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols. The specific skills used in grades 3–5 are identifying mathematical properties and using them to compute with whole numbers, representing an unknown quantity with a letter or symbol, and expressing mathematical relationships using equations. |
