Surprisingly lack of talent isn t what drives them from the easel their frustration seems to stem from their inability to accept the difference between reality and paint. Students of painting suffer from this problem too when they believe they have to make a tree out of leaves instead of paint and think a brush can actually bring the sky down onto a canvas. Once they realize that the look of the paint is the only way to recreate the subject they will have conquered the major frustrating part of painting. From the look of my paintings people have conjectured that I paint well because I am a perfectionist. Absolutely not Perfectionism in painting is too frustrating. I only try to make the best of it. The best of what paint can be and what paint can do. Paint can t be the tree or the sky 1 translate them with brushstrokes of paint mostly in a layer that more than adequately covers the canvas. 1 make mixtures of bright or dull colors that are either light or dark and by a well-thought-out procedure I make the contrasting tones fit together to record the shapes of the composition. I m frustrated all right but my frustration is not about painting it s the pressure of not having enough time to paint. I overcome this by being well organized with my time practical with my procedures and efficient with my materials. For those few times that I get out of my studio to paint landscapes I have some medium-toned gray canvases on hand in sizes from 9 x 12 to 18 x 22 inches. The changing light outdoors adds to my pressure of time I can only work for about two hours making a canvas larger than 18 x 22 more ambitious than practical. A toned canvas prepared with acrylic gesso toned with black or violet is easier to paint on than a white one. I can lay in light patterns of color and immediately see their shape and effect as they contrast the gray tone of the canvas. I don t
