Students are encouraged to think about their learning habits and consider other options open to them. People learn in different ways and it would be inappropriate to insist on particular strategies or talk about bad habits. All the same some habits are less helpful for students at this level with CAE as a goal and it is useful if students can come to this conclusion themselves. Focus on Listening Learning a Language pp. 16-17 This task is an example of one kind of task which may occur in Part 3 of the Listening paper in the exam multiple choice questions. A second kind of task sentence completion will be introduced later. Tell students they are going to hear an interview with a Japanese woman who is living in England and learning English. Ask them to work in pairs for a few moments and discuss what kind of problems she might have and what she could do to improve her listening and her vocabulary. Tell them to read through the first line of all the questions but not the multiple choice options A-D and give them no more than one minute to do this. Then ask them to recall as many of these in their own words as they can. Write brief versions on the board in any order before letting students look back to find any they ve forgotten. Play the recording the first time and then give students plenty of time to look through the options A-D. Play the recording a second time and ask them to compare their answers in pairs. Monitor their discussions and if they are having a lot of difficulty you could offer to play the recording a third time. During the checking phase discuss the answers in detail establishing not only why correct answers are correct but why other answers are wrong and playing relevant sections of the recording again if necessary.
