Most of the design concepts and equations described in this chapter are based on new research findings developed in the United States. Some background related to current design standards is also provided. Two-Level Performance-Based Design Most modern design codes for the seismic design of bridges essentially follow a two-level performancebased design philosophy although it is not so clearly stated in many cases. The recent document ATC-32 2000 by CRC Press LLC 2 may be the first seismic design guideline based on the two-level performance design. The two level performance criteria adopted in ATC-32 were originally developed by the California Department of Transportation 5 .
