The skin has many essential functions, including protection, thermoregulation, immune responsiveness, biochemical synthesis, sensory detection, and social and sexual communication. Therapy to correct dysfunction in any of these activities may be delivered topically, systemically, intralesionally, or through ultraviolet radiation. | ). Neurotoxicity is common with overuse or misuse of lindane. When this agent is used correctly, however, its side effect of neurotoxicity can be minimized. The lotion is applied in a thin layer from the neck down and left in place for 8 to 12 hours or overnight. Attention should be given to this application to ensure that areas such as the fingernail folds and the soles of the feet are not missed. The lotion should be removed by thorough washing at the end of the 8- to 12-hour period. To avoid problems with neurotoxicity, the lotion should be applied only in a thin coat to dry skin. It should not be applied immediately after bathing, and it should be kept away from the eyes, mouth, and open cuts or sores. After application to infants, the hands should be covered with mittens to avoid incidental ingestion of the lotion.
