There is good reason to believe that Gordon Gould made the first light laser. Gould was a doctoral student at Columbia University under Charles Townes the inventor of the maser. Gordon Gould was inspired to build his optical laser starting in 1958. He failed to file for a patent his invention until 1959. As a result Gordon Gould s patent was refused and his technolgy was exploited by others. It took until 1977for Gordon Gould to finally win his patent war and receive his first patent for the laser. FACSIMILE Facsimile transmission over wires or faxing was invented by Alexander Bain a Scottish mechanic who in 1843 received a British patent for improvements in producing and regulating electric currents and improvements in timepieces and in electric printing and signal telegraphs. Alexander Bain had created a fax machine transmitter that was designed to scan a flat surface made of metal using a stylus mounted on a pendulum and the stylus picked up the images on the surface. An amateur clock maker Alexander Bain adapted parts from clock mechanisms combined with telegraph technology to invent his fax machine. 244 X-RAY On 8 Nov 1895 Wilhelm Konarad Runtgen accidentally discovered an image cast from his cathode ray generator projected far beyond the possible range of the cathode rays now known as an electron beam .
