Theodore Roosevelt In this chapter a detailed decomposition of the System Development Framework SDF building block is developed which was discussed in the preceding chapters. An example loosely drawn from a conceptual spacecraft study done in the early 1990s is included in order to clarify the application of the SDF. The primary focus of the example is functional analysis and decomposition. The spacecraft mission from which this example was drawn was the operation of an astronomical telescope in a low earth orbit. The example is simplified in order to keep attention focused on explaining the application of the SDF to a real development activity. In order to maintain clarity of the SDF discussion the example will be applied at the end of each section. This spacecraft system will be referred to as Example Sat or ESAT for short. The task for the ESAT program is to develop the spacecraft bus that portion of the satellite that supports the telescope in space. As discussed in Chapter 1 the term system has been defined as any entity within prescribed boundaries that performs work on an input in order to generate an output. Using this definition it is asserted that at any level of the development hierarchy there exist one or more systems. At the level below the top level or system level these are .
